Beware Herbal Supplements

Tests conducted by the New York State attorney general showed that most top-selling herbal supplements did not contain any of the herbs listed on their labels.

The New York Times recently reported that, “the tests showed that pills labeled medicinal herbs often contained little more than cheap fillers like powdered rice, asparagus and houseplants, and in some cases substances that could be dangerous to those with allergies.”

A safer way to get a myriad of health-boosting natural ingredients is to drink tea regularly, preferably loose leaf green tea.

Tea contains some 20 amino acids, including brain-boosting theanine, and many essential vitamins, like vitamin A, B complex, E and K. Thirty different critical minerals are found in tea, including potassium, phosphorous, iron, magnesium and calcium, plus chlorophyll and hundreds of flavonoids and other aromatic components.

Tea is also rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins or OPCs. OPCs are some of the most effective antioxidants in nature. And tea contains large amounts of catechins, with the potent epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG being the most abundant. So remember, tea is not only enjoyable to drink, but is a natural, health-packed “herbal supplement,” too.
