Theanine in Tea: The Natural Brain and Immune Booster

L-theanine is a unique type of amino acid that is mainly found in the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. In humans, L-theanine easily enters the brain and may affect neurotransmitters in the brain such as GABA and Dopamine.

L-theanine also increases the generation of a particular kind of brain waves known as Alpha waves. These impulse waves are associated with alert relaxation. This is assumed to be the primary reason for the milder “buzz” that tea generates compared to coffee. Some studies have indicated that L-Theanine, especially when consumed with caffeine, can enhance attention and general cognitive functions. It also promotes faster memory reaction time to numbers.

Theanine may also help the immune response respond to infections by boosting the activity of certain disease-fighting T cells in the body. A study that compared 11 coffee drinkers to 10 tea drinkers found that the production of antibacterial proteins in the blood was up to five times higher in the tea drinkers, pointing to a more potent immune response in tea drinkers.
